Episode description:
Cris Grossmann co-founded Beekeeper and led the company as CEO for 14 years. What started as a student side project in Zurich eventually became a platform used by frontline workers around the world. Beekeeper grew past $50 million in annual recurring revenue before merging with LumApps in 2025, creating a combined company valued at more than $1 billion.
In this episode of Growth Decoded, Cris takes us behind some of the decisions that shaped that journey. He explains why Beekeeper emerged only after several failed experiments, including a student flirting app and a series of community pilots. He also shares how the company nearly ran out of money and survived while he worked on IT projects at Swisscom.
Later, Cris reflects on the period when growth at all costs stopped working. A difficult Series C forced Beekeeper to become far more disciplined about efficiency, eventually leading to its hiring “control tower” and a significant improvement in revenue per employee. He then explains how the team anticipated consolidation in the market and why the merger with LumApps became the next step in building a much larger company.
